Binary package hint: gnome-panel
When you add a custom launcher, and want to set an icon, the icon
browser is extremely unpleasant to use.
For example: I work with Eclipse installed in a custom directory. I want
to add a launcher for it.
I open the 'create launcher' dialogue.
I press the 'select icon' button. I get presented with a list of
standard icons. However, this is a custom application: a standard icon
is unlikely to be of any use. I have to sit and wait for it to load
anyway, which takes several seconds, before I can proceed.
Once it has loaded, I press the 'Browse...' button, and get a
conventional file browser. I can now navigate into the Eclipse
directory. Unfortunately this has been configured to only show
directories and not files. The intention is that I should select a
directory and the icon browser will then show me all the icons in that
directory, but in this situation I don't where Eclipse has kept its
icons (it varies from version to version). Because the file browser
isn't showing me files, I can't see the icons. I have to go to a shell
and search manually, and then go back to the file browser and select the
appropriate directory.
Now the icon browser reloads and I can finally select my icon.
This has all taken about a two minutes. It's just too complicated. It's
a classic example of being too clever to be actually useful. What I
actually *want* is a standard file dialogue that will let me select a
.png file. I appreciate the need to allow the user to pick one of the
standard icons; adding a standard preview pane and a 'go to standard
icons directory' button would achieve this. But as it stands it's simply
not useful --- hiding files from the file browser dialogue is simply
unforgivable! At the very least they should be visible but greyed out.
