I have tried this with a usb stick (fat32), a 2,5" hd with ext3 and a 3,5" hd (encrypted with LUKS and ext3 as fs). It looks always the same, no errors/warnings in messages. Manually mounting (with cryptsetup for the luks disk of course) works perfect, no strange behavior. It seems that gnome isn't getting the trigger to recognize these devices. This problem does not only apply to me: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1309239 I have installed karmic from the alternate cd with ext3 as fs for the root fs.
