you are right - I switched to metacity now - and everything just works - even
faster. No artifacts anymore :-). Thanks for this advice!
for everybody who does not know how to switch: just type in the terminal:
gksudo gconf-editor
and navigate to

- metacity
- gerneral

Same problem with me: Karmic / 64 bit, NVidia driver 185. It happens
when I work with my big screen only (1920x1200). I get the problem in
firefox, openoffice, gedit.
In open-office the cursor is not removed when I move on to the next
line. Scrolling (with the mouse-wheel) in gedit, openoffice,
openoffice - show how the cursor produces artifacts while writing text

You can alleviate damages by activating Force synchronization between X

here scrolling works fine). This kind of issues are present in Mutter
too, so I think
Maybe it's time to reopen this bug?

The same still in Open Office. I think it is alleviated - a bit better

same for Firefox and Nautilus.
I have the workaround now: The problem appears just after a while when working

I prefer Metacity.

Oh, I'm sorry, my connection went down when I was editing the bug.
Anyway I reopened because for this bug still exists. Maybe it needs a
bit more of investigation. I'm still on Karmic and I have an nvidia

help in some way please
ok let's close the report for now then, thanks for the info.

I think this issue is nvidia or compiz related, I can reproduce this only with
gedit or openoffice, everything happens randomly. If the pc is a bit stressed is
easier to get this kind of errors. I had this error with every version of
Ubuntu I've tried so far, starting from Gutsy. Somebody
which version of the nvidia driver are you using there phireph0x ? i
have an nvidia card as well but i don't see the issue.

I experience this quite often as well. It happens with documents that I
never had any problems with before upgrading to Karmic. Also, it's not
consistent; sometimes a document will render perfectly, other times the
same document will have artifacts. I'll upload screenshots and an
example the next
I've attached a screenshot where the problem is illustrated. The PDF
file can be found at the following address: (Click on 'PDF' in the top

- It's not limited to PDF files. It just observed it with a PS file as well.
- It mostly seems to happen when I have multiple documents open at
