Yes I can see there is something wrong with my account/setting. I went to
another account and things are fine there. Although I don't know why, the
problem can be something other than file browser.
Any possibilities? Thanks

It is reproducible.
Just use file browser and navigate to some directory with more than 20
file/subdirectories.
mouse click the right pane and press a letter key (say 'm' if there are some
file/subdirectory whose name start with 'm', Nothing happened! BUT in
9.04, one of the file/subdirectory
