Andreas, I am with you with not knowing whether this is a bug or a
feature. Certainly it is a carry-over from when Linux was predominately
used by programmers who learn that '\t' means tab.

Ok, it turns out that this is very similar to a old bug report, which
was already passed on upstream to the gnome people. I have kindly asked
them for an update on this issue.
