It seems I have solved my case. As I am new to Ubuntu I do not know if this is the case in previous generations but under System - Administration there is a Login screen setup utility where I had to remove login automatically selection. Silly, this sort of thing I believe should be under one menu

I'd like to add that I have had this issue with gnome on karmic UNR 32bit and I am having it with karmic kubuntu 64bit. So perhaps this has nothing to do with gnome-screensaver but something at a lower level? As previous posters, I've been unable to figure out a pattern, this happens sometimes. I

I've faced this on and off. I don't know what triggers this behavior, but once it started I think it stays until the system is rebooted (not sure if rebooting solves this though). One more thing I've noticed happening with this is that, the Lock screen from menu doesn't work - I've to use

I'll try out your suggestions Marc. It hasn't happen recently. I'm wondering if it had something to do with GnomeDo's Files and Folders plug-in, which was sometimes causing suspend to fail. I fixed that problem and it hasn't happened since, but we'll see. I'll report back if there's any updates.
