Thanks for your bug. That's a feature of evolution, files are opened to a temporary directory and without it people were modifing them and saving changes to the temporary directory and having difficulties to find it again then. With the read-only mode you have to save it to a known location and

You are right, these files will be opened read only. BUT: There is a symbol in the menu and if you click on it a copy of the file will be created and you can edit the copy. Or you save the file. I hope this can help you. I have tested this with AbiWord and with AbiWord you can edit the file.
