Rolf, Ubuntu binaries are not ready for an embedded use case where the
space saving issue would really make a difference. However we do care
to have support for Thai out of the box -- especially if it's so cheap
in terms of space to get.

Why do you ask if you set this ticket to invalid? Do you really want an
answer? I agree maybe this isn't the most important issue. Nonetheless
it should be obvious that most people don't need libthai0.
The solution is obvious and discussed in the debian ticket (thank you
for linking to it):
you are really arguing for 108k of disk space? no real comment out of
that this discussion has been overuse of ressources for what the bug is
worth, you could find a thousand way to spare the same disk space by
asking to clean random files or depends
