I attached a screenshot of the way that Gimp uses in order to browse the
image. A rectangle represents the current view into a a small window
showing the full image.

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the

Below are the solutions I can imagine :
A. key pressed as mode selector
When pressing the shift key, the mouse cursor changes from a hand to a
caret cursor. Next the mouse can be used for selection and automatic
copy like it is currently doing.
B. button mode selector in the toolbar

thanks for the report, and then how are you going to select the text for
doing copy paste? lot of people keep pressed the left button for doing
that. any thoughts?
