This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody
experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software.
could someone facing the bug forward this to upstream as mentioned in comment
#32 .
Once submitted upstream , do report back here with the upstream
It still happens, but after killing telepathy-butterfly everything works
fine for some time (this does not even disconnect other protocols).

Lucid with Empathy 2.30.1, had the same Network Error issue. Solved by
closing Empathy, killing /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-butterfly and
staring Empathy again, will report back if it happens again. Is there
any info missing in this bug or is this, as stated above, an upstream
problem ?

MSN: connection error. Gtalk works good (just some problem with sound, but it's
not important).
I removed telepathy-butterfly and the dependencies, and installed the
telepathy-haze.
After that i close and restart empathy, made a new msn connection
there are a few bug reports about this, most likely duplicated ones...
I have Lucid amd64 and I'm also affected.
I'm not sure but it seams to happen when computer comes out of suspension.
the easy fix is to run killall telepathy-butterfly and then reconnect, it
works, but it's a pain.

Ioannis, I had the same issue (Ubuntu 10.04 i386 here). What I did is

@loannis Vranos: removed telepathy-butterfly, telepathy-haze installed
already and restarted empathy. Unfortunately, quick fix doesn't work in
my case (run lucid).

don't remove telepathy-butterfly, that's not the way to get that issue

could somebody having the bug copy the empathy debug dialog butterfly

does stopping the running telepathy-butterfly and let empathy reconnect
workaround the issue?

A quick fix is this:
Remove telepathy-butterfly and you should just have telepathy-haze installed.
It works under Ubuntu 9.10, I suppose it works in 10.04 too.

There is the same issue with Empathy and MSN in Ubuntu 9.10.
This is a major issue, since MSN is one of the largest (I think the
largest) IM network, and Empathy is the default client. I think this can
be a bad first impression for new Ubuntu users.
Needs to be fixed now,

I would try, but how? That's the point I wanted to tell: if I modify the
port to 1863, the change on UI seems not to be used at all, network
error again, and if I reopen the account window I can see that port
number is set to zero again. So it seems I can't modify it (well at
