Why the blazes would they remove this function altogether? Do they give
any rationale for this?

nautilus . /usr/bin/xvkbd -xsendevent -text '\[F3]' doesn't work,
the $#@%^ thing still opens with a single window open.
Am I missing something else?

I tried the open two instances idea. It's a no-go unless you have
infinite patience for adjusting window size and positions, and don't
mind wasting the space for the fourth (second / extra) places? column
or covering it with the left side screen, and bouncing around to keep it
covered. This
This can be easily achieved by opening nautilus as follows:
nautilus . /usr/bin/xvkbd -xsendevent -text '\[F3]'

I'd love to see the second pane remembered by default, too. I find
myself switching to the terminal every time I want to copy or move
files, because it's more comfortable for addressing multiple locations -
that simply *cannot* point to a good design choice for a graphical

For me Nautilus is unusable without the second pane, And I don't want to
add it manually every time I open it, since it doesn't work for now, I'm
going to have to stay with krusader even though I have to install all
the KDE libraries just for that app.

I would like to add my vote as well for having an extra pane remembered.
This will not affect other users, but stand as an additional option, and
it's always good to have additional options.

I've tried to add manually start_with_extra_pane true on gconf-editor,
but it didn't work.
This is an optional feature, It won't affect normal users so I don't
understand why it was removed...

I would like to add my vote as well to this issue.
I often use split-panel mode to transfer files and compare directories.
It is quick, easy, and built-in.
I do not see what the problem is with making this an option so that
those who wish for the split-panel view to be the default behavior can

wont fix would have been a better status I think. The upstream went the
other way and decided to just forget if the extra pane was ever open.

doesn't hurt anyone.

i would politely suggest that an extra pane default option would be
essential in netbook remix due to desktop space issues, comparing/drag-
dropping files between folders is very uncomfortable at the moment
because of the lack of title-bar when windows are maximized, having to
press F3 everytime
I will also refer to this thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435333 and too would very much
like to be able to set dual-pane view by default.

I would respectfully ask that this not be pushed? I for one would like a
defaulted dual-pane mode for nautilus there are a couple of other people in
Ubuntu-testing (Lucid) that would like this changeable with a gconf key. Please
see this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1435333
I, too would very much like to be able to set dual-pane view by default.
If the GNOME-developers are unwilling to let us do so, t least modify
this behavior for Ubuntu.

This is indeed fixed upstream. However, the status Fix Committed has got
a different use. Please read the documentation at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status. Thank you for helping!
The way upstream decided to solve this by letting Nautilus forget about
everything related to the panes. They
Sense, we use Fix Committed on the desktop team for GNOME packages when
they are fixed upstream. The Launchpad bug watches are often unreliable

difficult to find which Ubuntu bugs are fixed by a particular update (so
we can add
I can confirm this on an up-to-date lucid install.
