OK, so experimental VDPAU support was actually added in GStreamer Bad
Plug-ins 0.10.14, supporting MPEG2, MPEG4 and H.264. It was improved a
lot in Gstreamer 1.2. Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander currently has
gst-plugins-bad1.0 version 1.2.0-3ubuntu5 and Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr
currently has
Support for VDPAU and VA-API is currently targeted for Gstreamer 1.2,
which is scheduled for release in December 2012. See

vaapi :
