So the bug has already been fixed in libgtksourceview 2.10.1. The
version that lucid starts with is 2.10.0. Any chance that an update to
2.10.1 can be made through update-manager or apt soon?

Sebastien, I have confirmed that the new version of gtksourceview2 in
lucid-proposed does indeed fix this bug. Thanks!
To be more explicit, the lucid-proposed contains both an update for
gedit and an update for gtksourceview2. I only installed the
gtksourceview2 update, and the problem with

Steps to reproduce(used to confirm this bug):
1. Open gedit, create new document
2. type abcde ENTER
3. hit 'tab' to indent the next line
4. type 1234 ENTER
5. hit ENTER
You now have two text lines, the second of which is indented. The third
line is blank, but indented.
6. hit ENTER

The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it
could send the bug the to the people writting the software
