We're planning on sticking with Lucid until the next LTS. Given that
this is a very basic issue that affects every desktop user I would have
to request for this to be backported. Is there any specific place to
request this?

right, the number of users subscribed to the bug is low and there is no
duplicate so it's low on the stable update list, the change will be
uploaded to the current unstable distribution to be tested then
backported to lucid later on
