Right, the superscript and subscript character are not wrong, they're
just poorly chosen!
You may want to install the older version of gcalctool in Lucid if this
functionality is very important:

I've seen that word size and base are in preferences but is not so easy to make
base conversions "on the fly" with that.
the old version has radio buttons that permits changing base (and obtain the
conversion) with just one click.
