abhijit press ctrl+h in empathy and your offline contacts will hide. Is this
what you want btw empathy does not display offline contacts you might have
enabled that yourself

well, actually i had the gtalk kind of feature in mind where in the
list, position of contacts keeps on updating as and when people come and
go but yeah you're right i didn't know the ctrl+h option so that would
work out as well...
