This is bug in Cairo. It was fixes in cairo-1.2.2. I'm not sure if this
version is available in Edgy.

I'm pretty sure I didn't have Cairo installed.
Yes - antialiasing was a workaround but not a very satisfactory one.

It appears this is not due to libcairo, but binary incompatibilities
with xorg 7.1.
