Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have an old Dell Inspiron 8000 with an Nvidia video card. I installed
the Beta of 10.4 (Karmic) and after performing a full update, can no
longer log in.

When I boot, the GDM login screen shows. I then select my user account
and the password prompt shows. At this point the mouse and keyboard
hang for about 3 or 4 seconds then GDM crashes and restarts. I have to
drop to a terminal then run 'stop gdm' as root. I can then run 'startx'
and get into X as root.
