The other issue can be related to HAL, which is deprecated. Removing
hal, and halinfo packages solved the mouse problem for me. Despite the
fact that this, in the long run, is the correct solution (hal is
deprecated), you probably want to proceed with caution.

I have the same problem (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, HP Pavilion dv2-1028, ATI
video card), and the same workaround works. (I haven't tested hibernate
yet.)

I have the same problem (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, IBM Thinkpad T60). The
pointer appears again after clicking on Ctrl-Alt-F6 and then Ctrl-
Alt-F7.
