This all seems to come from the kernel soft lockup triggered by usplash on
AMD64. See bug #60053.
Disabling usplash solved the problem, that was not directly related to gconf /
evolution.

firefox is not a GNOME application, it doesn't use gconf. It's weird
that you have to use a .gconf.path, do you still have the issue without
it? Maybe it got fixed by something else

Thanks for your bug. Is your desktop working fine when that happens? Do
you have anything to /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog about a disk
or gconf issue? It seems to be an issue with your configuration rather
than an issue from evolution itself if firefox also had the same issue
