Even if I choose to not spin down my disks when on battery, the spin down is actually done (by pm-utils I think). Have a look at /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive (line 12) Actually it seems that the variable DRIVE_SPINDOWN_VALUE_BAT must be previously set when calling the script, otherwise the default value of 6 (30 seconds) is used.
