My understanding is that MPRIS is enabled in Totem only by the D-Bus
Service plugin. However, enabling this plugin doesn't seem to make any
difference to the sound menu (on Precise, at least).

I don't like to play with bug reports, but this bug is still present in quantal
12.10.
It's still not clear where's the problem: upstream says totem already supports
MPRIS2 (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640644#c3)
So, ubuntu :) what's your next move?

According to GNOMEs bugzilla totem supports MPRIS2.1 since 3.2. So this
bug should be fixed in precise+1.
Btw: wouldn't it be better to just control the volume of all other
non-musicplayer apps like in they're by the applications-tab in the
sound-settings.
Maybe just move this feature to
indicator sound required MPRIS2 could someone send the bug upstream or
find a relevant bug report please.

No, I don't see a bug report for this upstream, but I guess they won't
do libindicate registration, maybe MPRIS2 support.
