I have this problem too. Clean Edgy install with all updates. Right
after system start screensaver (GLMatix) works fine. But after first
occurrence of 'monitor sleep mode' screensaver never shows - screen just
fades (as usual) and goes completely black (bug). No screensaver
appears.
Temporary fix
My test machine for this bug was a clean install of edgy with updates.
With regular restarts... happens on the odd occation.

i had this happen to me as well, if you kill gnome-screensaver and rerun
it then it's fixed. but it shouldn't bug up in the first place.

I had the same problem and I solved by reinstalling the gnome-
screensaver package. Although it is now solved, I think this should be
corrected for the next maintenance release of edgy. Unfortunately I
couldn't find any trace of this problem in the log file for helping
solving this problem.

The same problem for me. After upgrade from Dapper Drake to Edgy Eft
(Release) instead of screen saver blank screen is shown.
