I can confirm that this still happens in Hardy 8.04 on Evolution 2.22.1,
the exact same issue, messages marked as read in the unread messages
view disappear when opened but display in the preview pane and will
display properly if you mark the message as unread before opening or
switch the view to
the issue seems similar to bug #181387, maybe you could give a try to
the new version and comment on whether it fixes the issue for you?

Many Thanks Sebastien. The 2.22.1.1 version did in fact address this
issue.
For those that follow:
I simply checked the pre-release option in my synaptic package manager
updates tab
(gnome panel system - administration - Synaptic package manager -
settings - repositories - Updates -
Also confirmed on Gutsy RC.

I also encounter this problem running Ubuntu 7.04, Feisty Fawn,
2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 19:00:28 UTC 2007 x86_64. Evolution
2.10.1. I'm sorry I can't be much more help than that.

I can add that if you minimize, then maximize the reading window, the

I am getting the same problem in Gutsy - Tribe 2 (all updates done)
Using Compiz-fusion.
Same problem with Feisty with all updates done and Beryl with Emerald
themes is being used.
I can reproduce this problem consistently by using John Leach's
described steps.

no composite manager. Not sure about any particular option, I've had my
Evolution/gconf settings for years now.
I've just confirmed this with 2 friends laptops, both running Edgy on
ppc.
to clarify test:
1. find a mail folder with some unread mail in
2. using the show combo, select Unread

Edgy, in sync with the latest repository.
The Show combo box at the top of the message list in the main window.
This is new to Evolution 2.8 iirc.
