Reinstalled nautilus-data and all seems well again.
Background:
I do not nor have I ever installed automatix, I only have pure Ubuntu (main,
restricted, *verse) packages installed on this machine.
Any ideas why upgrading nautilus-data didn't work but reinstalling did?

it looks like there is some difficult to trigger issue to gconf schemas
registration code or gconf is sensible at local issues on the box that
can happen at installation time. Marking as duplicate of bug #50150
