The crash might be due to a memory corruption problem. Could you try to
get a valgrind log for it? (you can follow the instructions from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind for that)

I just tried opening gnome-volume-control from a command prompt, changed
a slider and exited. No crash. Tried starting it from the volume
applet, changed a slider, exited. No crash.
Fixed some how?

I only happened across it when i was adjusting some volumes and it only
crashed a few moments after the volume control
