After upgrading to Oneiric, I too see this. I have tried various settings in Edit/Preferences/Mail Preferences/General to no avail. It is currently set to 'Monospace 10' for both standard and fixed width fonts, and all email previews are displayed as variable width. This is not great for reviewing
