Had 5 (3 in read-only mode) files open, tried to close 4 of them with
ctrl+W and gedit grayed out and then crashed.

I had also a php file open at gedit. Gedit crashed when I pressed to
open a txt file (from firefox).

IDK if it helps or is related but when the problem happened I had an FTP
connection to a remote webserver open in Nautilus and had a php file
open.
