I'm working on Ubuntustudio 7.10, gutsy gibbon, shared-mime-info is
version 0.22-2ubuntu2 and have that same problem (didn't have it under
edgy eft and skipped feisty fawn); installing the stand-allone version

Actually, I installed ufraw which has it's own mime-info file and the
behaviour is now consistent. The Nikon-reference came from
/usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml, which maybe should include
a bit more than just this:
