I just experienced this crash. I installed Tribe3 (alternate version) which went fine. After the reboot, I tried logging in, got a blank screen and couldn't use Ctrl + Alt F1 to go to a terminal. Had to reset and boot into a terminal. Apt-get update and upgrade. Logged in. Compiz.real crashed. It got replaced automatically by a working window manager (metacity).
