I'm also encountering this issue since a few days, and I'm using Lucid.
When it happens, there's always an uname zombie too. As natilus
refuses to start another instance, and both are children of init, the
only option is to reboot the system.

Thanks for writing.
In my case it was a miss behaving program, bst.linux, which is an IDE
for writing programs for Propeller. This program was never completely
finished and was last updated in March 2010.
I suspect that it could not cope with the newer GTK files as it would
crash when opening
right, the fact that you are the only one to get that issue combined
with it stopping when not using that software suggest that the software
is indeed acting buggy and leading to the issue, I'm closing the bug,
thanks for the update!

Sebastien.
An update. I ran nautilus for two days without a problem. I did not
use bst.linux the program that fails. I suspect that bst.linux 'leaks'
and corrupts other programs does that make sense to you? I understand
that bst was written and compile in Delphi. The last and I suspect final
do you get any error in /var/log/syslog when the issue happens? could
you copy the log to the bug? that bug is a bit weird, when you get the
issue is nautilus still displaying icons on your background? what
happens graphically?
could you run ps uafx | grep nautilus and copy the output to the bug?
Sebastien
I shut down every night
I will leave nautilus open and capture syslog. I looked back at
syslog.7 to see if there was anything
Yes it is weird.
Nautilus graphic stays on the screen but does not respond to clicks. I
use ps and kill to clear the screen.
ps uafx | grep nautilus

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
This will help us to find and resolve the problem.
** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu)
Sebastien,
Yes it happens every time I leave it open on that particular version of
ubuntu. It does not happen on my 64 bit system. We actually have 3
machines running ubuntu but the third one has not been in use for long
enough to know.
We would need to set up 32 bit machine open nautilus
Current work around is open nautilus, use it, close it.
