I get the exact same problem with rhythmbox-client --play and several
other options (--pause, --play-pause, etc.) on my Precise install.
Interestingly enough, rhythmbox-client --notify seems to be an exception
of sorts; it still refuses to work, but returns instead:
Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unknown
Reproduced in rhythmbox 2.95-5ubuntu1.
However, this should be fixed in commit
http://git.gnome.org/browse/rhythmbox/commit/?id=778d3317900337dc7177d0a80ee052f966094485
and will be available in rhythmbox 2.96 version
