adding some more info.
I think the problem is related to the beryl window manager (not in
standard in ubuntu)
reverting to metacity seems to fix the problem, both from the command
line (after clean reboot and update from this morning) and from the menu
(by the way, command from the menu is as exp
errr.. it was working from the command line a reboot ago.
now I get the same symptom, being that once I've entered my password the
whole screen remains grayed out.
looking at "top", cpu usage is close to 100% ...

Hello. It works fine on my system. Could you check a few settings
please? Open the menu editor and see that the login iten uses the
command 'gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup' and that that also works from the
command line (though I can't think why it shouldn't). When you run 'gksu
gdmsetup', do you get any
