it's not only a notebbok related issue i see the similar behavior on MSI H61M-P22(B3) mainboard. The the screen will be turned off but the CPU fan will be slowed but never going off. I tested this with booting from Ubuntu 12.04 distribution DVD and and Try Ubuntu. Both power off just after start

I also found out that after some time of using Ubuntu I can't switch to a terminal session anymore. Using Strg-Alt-F2 for example does not work after a while. The screen turns black and that's it. Pressing Strg-Alt-F7 brings me back to Unity again. The shutdown works fine as long I can switch
