After I kill the X server using ctrl-alt backspace, logging back on
usually hangs partway through the gnome setup progress with the centre
splash still up, sometimes showing update-notifier.
Launching gnome terminal just hangs - no window appears. firefox will
start tho.
I can confirm that the segfault was due to the absence of /etc/gdm/gdm
.conf-custom after playing around with xgl/compiz. The instructions on
the forums say that one should delete this file to disable xgl/compiz.
It appears as mentioned above that removing this file causes gdmsetup to
segfault.

Dapper has switched to gstreamer0.10 which doesn't do DVD playing with
totem yet. They stopped working on gstreamer0.8 too, that bug is not
likely to be worked, you should probably use totem-xine or another
player if you want to get a decent DVD playing for now

else). It is about some apps breaking the volume of other apps. More
precisely: the problem is that XMMS _and_ mplayer are able to bring the
sound system in such a state that you cannot hear anything with totem

Today's packages updates for Dapper included a new smbfs package. I
updated all packages on my Athlon64 to the latest, and put back the auto
smbfs mount.
When I booted, it did not hang in hald! However, the GNOME desktop took
over 45 seconds (I timed it) to start. Once the desktop was up, I

I have identical symptoms to Franz. I have a Palm Tungsten T.
I can successfully sync maybe 1 time in 20. All other times I receive
output from gpilotd just like Franz' above. I have tried creating a hard
/dev/pilot as suggested by Matt - the symptom persists, and then udev
scripts tidy up

Could you also try some other values and see whether the problem disappears at
one point?

what happens if you do
GST_DEBUG=3 GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 gst-launch-0.10 audiotestsrc !
audioconvert ! alsasink gst3.log
(and then try some buffer-times again and report if using the
audiotestsrc changes something)

I updated to Dapper and tried gxine on the weekend and its works fine now.
Dapper also fixed the audio although the modem is yet to function properly.
