[Bug 225618] Re: X server / gdm problem after upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04
The problem seems to be related to fglrx. Xorg complained that this file could not be found. I removed gdm and reinstalled it. The allowed me to get into the desktop, although the resolution was low. I installed all available updates and rebooted and things look fine now. In addition, I noticed that the update reset my software sources. I enabled the restricted sources, which may have allowed my ATI driver to get picked up, which I think is why I have graphics working now. So, I don't understand everything that happened, but I am working now. But, I think that there may be a bug in the upgrade relating to restricted drivers for video cards. Steve, I discussed this issue already with seb128 on #ubuntu-devel and he said it was ok to get this fix in SRU before it is done in intrepid. Following are the two major reasons. 1. The bug is a regression from last Ubuntu version. xvncviewer had an option to send Ctrl + Alt + Del to server and this is necessary for Windows login when connected over VNC. 2. The fix will not be available in Vinagre release in GNOME 2.22.2. Instead it will be available in 2.23.x. So it will not get in Hardy with the sync/merge of GNOME 2.22.2. Apart from this, should we really expect anyone to test Intrepid so early in the development cycle, assuming that vinagre will be updated with this fix within a month? There's still something weird going on that is related to this. If I insert media containing photos I expect the command specified by the gconf key /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autophoto_command to be run. However, this isn't happening. Instead, nautilus is trying to launch its idea of what should be handling photos and it is broken. It seems to be launching f-spot via /usr/share/applications/f-spot.desktop. I'm not sure where this association with nautilus is made - too many moving parts to understand. However, f-spot can no longer be run in import mode without specifying the --import option and f-spot.desktop is not specifying that option. I just get a dumb usage message in ~/.xsession- errors. So, shouldn't autophoto_command be used for media containing photos? If not, the association with nautilus needs to be fixed so that f-spot- import is run rather than f-spot. By the way, it took about 3 hours (for an experienced Linux user) to work out that autophoto_command is being ignored and the problem has something to do with nautilus. Public bug reported: When trying to view a keyboard layout, the window is always empty. I have Hardy on a macbook 4.1. I can either use the 'show current layout' in the keyboard layout applet or the 'choose keyboard layout' preference, the result is always the same: the window is empty and the picture is not shown. But the dialog asking me whether I want to create a new data disk or something else does not appear. If I try to use the cd burner integrated in nautilus, when I try to write the disc, the dialog asking to insert blank media is shown. Pressing the OK button has this dialog appear again and again. I use the option: “Use keyboard LED to show alternative layout ” - “Numlock shows alternative layout”. The problem is: NumLock LED (actually, neither Numlock, nor CapsLock nor Scrollock) doesn't switch on (doesn't change its status) when i switch the layout. This problem has happened after upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy. It worked well for Gutsy and Feisty.
