OK, sorry about that. Even though gdm is not buggy as such, preload
worked for the intrepid gdm and not for jaunty. So the problem is (imho)
that preload is not configured correctly for the new jaunty gdm.

I have a debug build installed and trying to reproduce it again. The
odd bit is that it either fails nearly immediately for me or runs
normally. In fact, on the first login after installing the debug build
it didn't even survive long enough for me to attach the debugger.
