When I insert a thumb drive it mounts as read only (even though it shows

Apparently, it's related to the theme engine I was using.
The separator (don't know if I can call it that, now) is not visible
when using Taqua, New Wave, Murrina, Mist, Loma, Inverted, Human,

I think you're blaming the wrong component... I'm having the same issue with
embedded terminal.
Try to reproduce it:
1) Start gedit, disable all plugins and close
2) Start system monitor
3) Start gedit and check CPU/mem stat (0% 10.2MB)
4) Enable the terminal plugin
It suddenly jumps to 15%
I have traced this down to the fact that nautilus is not launched when I
log on to gnome. I used ps -A | grep naut to show this.

to scientific display and all the results gcalctool is showing is
correct. The values FF81 you are getting from the Fox Calculator

Further testing shows that the accuracy does work at all. Simple case:
1. Open GCalctool in scientific mode
2. Set accuracy to 0 decimal places
3. Enter 100
4. Press enter
10 will be displayed instead of 100.
This does not occur in GCalctool 5.26.x (Jaunty)
