I use the latest Jaunty versions. Also added proposed and backports repos. Not having the digital output results in having totem _not_ playing AC3-files over S/PDIF. Instead I only get the 6 channel analog surround sound. Concerning the images, I let them on my server. When I find the time, I will upload them here. My guess is that pulseaudio needs some workaround/trick to recognize the digital output. Does it need an asoundrc file? I do not have one, yet. Huh.. no it's not okay to turn it into a guide.. People have been using gnome-terminal as root for years. Lecturing them on the dangerousity of their ways is just an excuse not to fix the bug. I do not mean to attack you personally, but I just hate it when people say why do you do that anyway? or it's much better if you do it the other way when there is a real bug. While I understand Ubuntu is targeted at the general public (including very, very dumb users), well not only dumb users use it, I guess. Those should have the freedom to launch gnome-terminal as root, knowing and accepting the risk. As for me, I have turned to x11-terms/terminal (gentoo package terminology), which is the xfce terminal emulator. It has nearly all features from gnome-terminal, without the wont-launch-as-root bug. But I seriously hope this bug is fixed upstream in gnome-terminal. Additionally, running gnome-settings-daemon is not always an acceptable workaround, since it messes up with gtk+ themes, desktop background, etc. Gnome is a trustworthy partner, but an invasive ex. (ie. when you just want to stay friends = just run gnome applications) As a conclusion, well, I guess a guide is better than nothing. Binary package hint: gnome-keyring
On previous release ubuntu 8.04/ubuntu 8.10 when using ssh to connect to
remote hosts with ssh private keys from within the gnome environment,
the ssh-askpass (gnome-ssh-askpass renamed) is launched to prompt for
the pass phrase for the keys in
$HOME/$USER/.ssh/{identity,id_dsa,id_rsa} once this pass phrase is input
it is handled by gnome-keyring/ssh-agent for future connects so that no
passphrase is required for any machine using that key.
On a clean install of ubuntu 9.04 the behaviour is different. Upon
connection to an ssh host, ssh-askpass is no longer launched and instead
the ssh terminal application prompts you for the key.
Without the setup of scripts/wrappers, this key must be entered every
time a user wants to connect to a host using that private ssh key.
There are many work arounds for this (using ssh agent, launching ssh-
askpass as a session at login etc) but I believe this is either a bug,
or an expected change in behavior in how gnome is intergrated with ssh.
I have been unable to find any documentation to indicate a change in
behavior in the gnome desktop environment.
I am unsure if this bug request should sit with the gnome-desktop
environment, gnome-keyring or the ssh team, I suspect this is a keyring
intergration issue, but I have been unable to find any
design/documentation on how keyring was working with 8.04/8.10 and ssh.

I've modified the bug title. The real problem is that a file with unknown extension remains in the download window when downloading finishes, and the user can't do anything with it. I expect that the download window gives me the possibility (via right click contestual menu) to go to the download folder, or to open it with some custum application.
