Today I printed the "subgroup(group theory)" page from wikipedia using
firefox, to a pdf file, which is small and vectorial. Then re-printed it
via evince for reasons that are not relevant, and the obtained pdf is

sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove

i've had the same issue (jaunty xubuntu fresh installation with intel video
card).
it seems like paul's solution:
sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove
sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults
works perfect.
later after playing with gdm and configuration autologin stopped working again
and this helped anot
The fix for karmic is at lp:~amoog/gnome-panel/ubuntu

It appears the problem was because unrar wasn't installed. Once it was
installed, everything seemed to work again.
Since it's it's in Evince's suggests, I guess this make it my user error.
