[Bug 187540] Re: Gnome-panel freeze when 8 windows are open when the panel is vertical/non-expanded horizontal
Here is a variant which touch more profoundly the layout algorithm. [Bug 502055] [NEW] screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp SUMMARY: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around. This bug was reported previously and relates to bug number 497179 with the following details: DETAILS: Hi, hope someone can help out. I have Ubuntu 9.10 upgraded from 9.04 and running dual boot parallel with XP Windows (which is not experiencing the same problem, so not a hardware fault). I start up and work for awhile and eventually the screen stops responding to the cursor, so I have to switch off power and reboot to continue. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this problem? CURRENTLY: I overlooked important instructions in the rush before Christmas - so I am now following them again as closely as possible. In reply to the instructed questions: The source package (as I understand it) is to do with this upgraded version. 1) the release is currently 9.10 2) the response to this command is 'W: Unable to locate package packagename'. I don't know what to check for in Synaptic?? INTERRUPTION!! - the screen keeps freezing as I attempt to complete this information so I will send now and add to it later if I can. In Karmic, I can confirm that the -m Platform script does not die after 3 minutes, consuming 10MB until reboot. I'll give a look at this problem. [Bug 449910] Re: Certain notification area icons are invisible
I think I'm having the same issue, regarding the notification area. I tried to do a google on it and this is what came up. This problem has been ocurring ever since i updated from Jaunty to Karmic. GNOME is v2.28.1 The problem has become more frequent lately though and now it seems to be ocurring every time I reboot. Most usually the network icon will not appear, and will be replaced by a second volume icon. This is always solved by deleteing the notification area from the panel and then adding it again. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 282315 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282315 I am not convinced this is a duplicate of bug #282315. #282315 is apparently fixed by the patch Don't stop the timer during autosave available here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=136917 But that bug causes the time to be reported as less than one minute, because the autosave happens every minute and clears the timer when it does so. This does not explain why the time might be reported as more than 77 days (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556932#c4 ) or similar. e.g. I played a game earlier today (Ubuntu 9.04, gnome-games 1:2.26.1-0ubuntu2) and, although the uptime of the machine was just over 2 hours, I was told I had completed the puzzle in 2 days, 19 hours, 13 minutes and 36 seconds. This was after playing a couple of other games. No crashes were involved (so no loading old puzzles that were saved/autosaved.) Actually I see no option to load old puzzles anyway, and wasn't aware of the autosave functionality before searching for this bug. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #556932 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556932 ** Attachment added: Screenshot showing uptime and reported solution time. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37341757/Sudoku%20Time%20Bug.png -- Error recording start time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/405025 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Dear Antony, thanks for your swift reply. I have enclosed the export of dpkg --get-selections. As you can see, the restricted-extras package is available. The issue I reported could be split is two: * the dependency in Rhythmbox for playing files, maybe add an extra report function for this? * the error in the GUI logic (unable to select active profiles as preferred) Good luck with solving the issue! [Bug 502084] Re: Evince fails to read the fontspec.pdf file
Evince uses poppler to render text in PDF files. Changed package from Evince to poppler. I solved the rendering problem (missing text) by using Synaptic Package Manager to install poppler-data. The file now renders fine, as far as I can tell. Not marking as invalid until we determine the best way forward. Should evince notify users when poppler-data is needed, based on the font- information in the file (see below)? Should poppler-data be installed by default? [Bug 429674] Re: Cannot disable keyboard shortcuts
You have to disable the F1 shortcut in gnome terminal keyboard shortcuts menu where you turned off the Enable menu access keys. In the list of shortcuts look for Action Help / Contents. You disable the default shortcut F1 by selecting the entry and pressing Enter to change it and then pressing the backspace key instead of the shortcut you would usually use. The Shortcut Key entry should change to Disabled. Now you should be good to go and use F1 in terminal. I personally disabled all the shortcuts this way and I can use them directly in terminal. All but Ctrl-F1 work fine. Ctrl-F1 does nothing. It seems to be an old bug inherited from Xterm. While in Xterm it has been fixed a while ago, in gnome-terminal it persists. If you really want to test all shortcuts I suggest using xterm or better *lxterm* which is a locale-sensitive wrapper of xterm. -- Cannot disable keyboard shortcuts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/429674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 502136] [NEW] Cannot move some items into new menus in alacarte menu editor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: alacarte In the alacarte menu editor, some items cannot be moved into new menus (folders). PROBLEM: Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Right click on the Ubuntu logo .. Applications .. Places .. System area in gnome-panel. 2. Select Edit Menus. This launches the (very temperamental and ill-documented) alacarte menu editor. 3. Unter Menus:, click on Applications (expand this menu if it isn't already). 4. Find and select an item that has a (forward) slash in its name, e.g. Applications -- CD/DVD Creator or Sound Video -- GnomeBaker CD/DVD Writer (if no such item is installed, you'll have to install/create one to reproduce the problem). 5. Drag and drop that item from the Items: list on the right hand side to another menu in the Menus: list on the left hand side. Normally, with items that don't have a slash in their name, this would make a copy of the item appear in the destination menu, switch the view to the destination menu (which is questionable behaviour), but NOT delete the item in the original menu you dragged the item out of. You have to go back to the original menu and delete the item there afterwards to properly and successfully complete the move. Apparently dragging and dropping in alacarte copies, and doesn't move. Shift-dragging appears to move, but does absolutely nothing. But that's normal for alacarte. (I said it was temperamental.) This bug report is not about this normal behaviour. (If this bugs you, then you go submit another bug. Don't hijack this one.) What this bug is about is this: When trying to drag and drop an item that has a slash in its name to a new menu/folder in the above way, the copy never appears in the new menu, and the view never properly switches to the new menu (the display of the Menus: and Items: lists becomes inconsistent at this point; the Menus: list shows the new menu as selected, but the Items: list still displays the contents of the old menu). This is because alacarte chokes on the slash in the item name; it doesn't properly escape it. Additional information can be gathered by closing alacarte, relaunching it from the command line, and trying to perform the aforedescribed drag and drop operation again then: $ alacarte Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py, line 421, in on_menu_tree_drag_data_received self.editor.copyItem(item, new_parent) File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py, line 290, in copyItem keyfile.write(open(out_path, 'w')) IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/home/MYUSERNAME/.local/share/applications/CD/DVD Creator.desktop' It appears that alacarte looks for an item called DVD Creator.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications/CD/, while in truth there is an item called CD/DVD Creator.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications/. Just one more reason to wonder if there's a good alternative to the gentle horror that is alacarte. WORKAROUND: The above problem can be worked around by first renaming the item in question (e.g. rename CD/DVD Creator to CD and DVD Creator or GnomeBaker CD/DVD Writer to GnomeBaker CD and DVD Writer), moving the renamed item as described above, and then renaming the item in the new location/menu back to its original name that included the slash. Re: [Bug 502084] Re: Evince fails to read the fontspec.pdf file
Interesting. My thinking then is that the poppler-data package shouldn't be a separate package at all. I suspect that upstream they are shipped together as a single thing? Of course, another way to resolve that logical dependency is to just have poppler depend on poppler-data. I don't think I completely understand you. Forgive me, English is not my native language... You say that due to package installation there is an increase of 90MB in memory usage. (see Step 2) 2) I never typed in any administration password and I didn't invoke the command while being root. So there aren't any packages being installed, ergo it can't be the cause of the increased memory usage. Correct? Thanks for looking into this issue and your quick reply. [Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it
I think I've solved the issue of metacity grabbing audible system bell events. The attached patch contains my changes to metacity (specifically src/core/bell.c). Please give it a try and let me know if it works for you. If not, please let me know. I am a complete novice at dealing with .deb files, so it's very likely that I messed something up and produced an invalid patch. This patch keeps metacity from grabbing system bell events. As a side effect it also solves the issue of metacity rate limiting the system bell events. It does not completely solve this bug. You still need to load (and possibly reload) the pcspkr module and turn the PC speaker on. I developed this patch by reverting bits of bell.c back to the version from jaunty. Here's the reasons for the changes, identified by the old line number referenced in the diff: 1) Near line 52, I removed the #include of canberra-gtk.h, since we will no longer be using libcanberra to make bell noises. 2) Near line 281, a large chunk of code is excised. I believe all of this was for playing the bell.ogg sound through libcanberra, but I'm not entirely sure. 3) Also in that area, code was restored to keep meta_bell_set_audible() from being a no-op. The restores the ability of the gconf key /apps/metacity/general/audible_bell to turn the audible bell on and off. 4) Near line 355, the final argument of a call of XkbChangeEnabledControls() is changed. This is necessary to keep metacity from trapping the audible bell events! As an aside, note that pulse audio's module-x11-bell *can* be used to play the bell.ogg sound in place of the PC speaker beep for system bell events. Since this is much easier to change and configure, I see no reason not to use this in place of the metacity/libcanberra solution for system bell events in future versions. ** Attachment added: Keep metacity from grabbing audible system bell events. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37349157/metacity_2.28.0-0ubuntu2.debdiff -- System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486154 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. [Bug 430203] Re: bell.ogg is unresponsive (outside HIG response times) [regression]
As best I can read the code, this rate limiting in metacity affects audible and visual bells identically. Thus, this change should allow metacity to flash a visible bell at 10 Hz. (I can't figure out how to enable the visual bell in 9.10, so I can't actually test this.) This seems like a bad idea, especially where epileptics are concerned. In my uniformed opinion, the responsibility for making system bell sounds should be moved out of metacity. Then the rate limiting can be left at 1Hz for the visual bell, while the audible bell can repeat as fast as possible. A patch I just submitted to bug #486154 removes metacity's ability to capture audible bell events, leaving the PC speaker or pulse audio's module-x11-bell with the responsibility for handling audible bell events. Yes, I can confirm this bug as well. I'm using Karmic Koala under VMWare and it was really annoying that the keyboard shortcuts for job control (ctrl-z) and yank text (ctrl-y) were reversed in emacs style editors were reversed. Just spent five hours researching it and was relieved to find these posts which helped me devise a solution which worked for me. My VMWare image from thoughtpolice.co.uk was configured with two initial keyboard layouts: German (dead keys) and USA. System default was USA. I added Canada / English, set it as the system default then removed both the USA and German keyboard layouts. Now the key bindings for ctrl-y (yank text in emacs style editors) and ctrl-z (job control) are working properly.
