[Bug 187540] Re: Gnome-panel freeze when 8 windows are open when the panel is vertical/non-expanded horizontal

2010-01-01 Thread Jean-Marc Bourguet
Here is a variant which touch more profoundly the layout algorithm. It
will add in the minor direction (rows for horizontal task list, columns
for vertical one) when too constrained.

[Bug 502055] [NEW] screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around

2010-01-01 Thread Terry O'Brien
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

SUMMARY: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves
around.

This bug was reported previously and relates to bug number 497179 with
the following details:

DETAILS: Hi, hope someone can help out. I have Ubuntu 9.10 upgraded from
9.04 and running dual boot parallel with XP Windows (which is not
experiencing the same problem, so not a hardware fault). I start up and
work for awhile and eventually the screen stops responding to the
cursor, so I have to switch off power and reboot to continue. Does
anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

CURRENTLY: I overlooked important instructions in the rush before
Christmas - so I am now following them again as closely as possible. In
reply to the instructed questions:

The source package (as I understand it) is to do with this upgraded version.
1) the release is currently 9.10
2) the response to this command is 'W: Unable to locate package packagename'. I
don't know what to check for in Synaptic??

INTERRUPTION!! - the screen keeps freezing as I attempt to complete this
information so I will send now and add to it later if I can.

[Bug 238183] Re: Useless memory consumption

2010-01-01 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
In Karmic, I can confirm that the -m Platform script does not die after
3 minutes, consuming 10MB until reboot. I'll give a look at this
problem.

Though, you mention in the description that there's a 90MB usage on
first launch. I guess this comes from the package installation, isn't
it? If that usage disappears after it's done, then that part is not a
bug.

Also still on 8.04 and I agree with the comment above by Chris. Readonly
dirs/files should not be moved to Trash.
And:
Files deleted on a nfs-dir are almost impossible to find because they reside on

[Bug 93849] Re: Feature request: Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec Support

2010-01-01 Thread Roman Polach
Note: mixing these licences on user's system is NOT license violation,
because it is not distribution of these pieces.. It is completely legal to mix
on your own machine software with different licenses, even non-free
(if you obtain all parts legally and you are allowed to modify - which is
at least for ALL free software perfectly legal)

[Bug 454794] Re: gnome-panel sometimes doesn't work sometimes after booting

2010-01-01 Thread Bubba
I have a similar (identical?) problem with intermittent panel freezes at boot.
I have found ten other bugs with nearly identical trouble.
I have also discovered that I can recover my panel functionality with two steps
that you may wish to try. This works 100% of the time on my machine.

Access a terminal (Ctl-Alt-F1) and execute the following command;

$ killall gnome-panel

The second step is to return to the desktop (Ctl-Alt-F7) and open a Run
application window (Alt-F2) and execute the command;

$ gnome-panel --replace

My panels and system are completely functional now (except for missing
weather apps). Do not use a desktop terminal for the second command -
the process will hang in a terminal. See Bug #466118 for more comments.

Hope this works for you too...

[Bug 449910] Re: Certain notification area icons are invisible

2010-01-01 Thread Kristian
I think I'm having the same issue, regarding the notification area. I
tried to do a google on it and this is what came up.

This problem has been ocurring ever since i updated from Jaunty to
Karmic. GNOME is v2.28.1

The problem has become more frequent lately though and now it seems to
be ocurring every time I reboot. Most usually the network icon will not
appear, and will be replaced by a second volume icon.

This is always solved by deleteing the notification area from the panel
and then adding it again.

The problem will never occur spontaneously, but only after rebooting.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282315

I am not convinced this is a duplicate of bug #282315. #282315 is apparently
fixed by the patch Don't stop the timer during autosave available here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=136917

But that bug causes the time to be reported as less than one minute,
because the autosave happens every minute and clears the timer when it
does so.

This does not explain why the time might be reported as more than 77
days (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556932#c4 ) or similar.

e.g. I played a game earlier today (Ubuntu 9.04, gnome-games
1:2.26.1-0ubuntu2) and, although the uptime of the machine was just over
2 hours, I was told I had completed the puzzle in 2 days, 19 hours, 13
minutes and 36 seconds. This was after playing a couple of other
games. No crashes were involved (so no loading old puzzles that were
saved/autosaved.) Actually I see no option to load old puzzles anyway,
and wasn't aware of the autosave functionality before searching for this
bug.

[Bug 502084] [NEW] Evince fails to read the fontspec.pdf file

2010-01-01 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

The fontspec documentation for XeTeX (available at CTAN at
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/xetex/latex/fontspec/) does not
render correctly in Evince. At some point in the past (that is, at
least two releases ago) it worked just fine. Scribd, the Web viewer for
documents like this, renders the file just fine (and Evince still
renders it incorrectly downloading it from there).

I will try to setup another version of Ubuntu in a VM and find the last
version that worked sometime today if I have the chance (though if
someone is running an older version of Ubuntu that comes across this
bug, a works/doesn't work result would be nice). Look on page 3, there
is a lot of blank space where there should be text. Looking at it on
Scribed at the same spot shows what it should appear as.

Re: [Bug 501884] Re: no sound playing mp3

2010-01-01 Thread kubuntu4u2
Dear Antony,

thanks for your swift reply.
I have enclosed the export of dpkg --get-selections.
As you can see, the restricted-extras package is available.

The issue I reported could be split is two:

* the dependency in Rhythmbox for playing files, maybe add an extra
  report function for this?
* the error in the GUI logic (unable to select active profiles as
  preferred)

Good luck with solving the issue!

Best regards,

Henk-Jan van der Molen

[Bug 502084] Re: Evince fails to read the fontspec.pdf file

2010-01-01 Thread madbiologist
Evince uses poppler to render text in PDF files. Changed package from
Evince to poppler.

I solved the rendering problem (missing text) by using Synaptic Package
Manager to install poppler-data. The file now renders fine, as far as I
can tell.

Not marking as invalid until we determine the best way forward. Should
evince notify users when poppler-data is needed, based on the font-
information in the file (see below)? Should poppler-data be installed
by default?

I have attached the output of pdffonts before installing poppler-data.
In my next comment I will attache the output of pdffonts after
installing poppler-data.

[Bug 429674] Re: Cannot disable keyboard shortcuts

2010-01-01 Thread vitek
You have to disable the F1 shortcut in gnome terminal keyboard shortcuts
menu where you turned off the Enable menu access keys. In the list of
shortcuts look for Action Help / Contents. You disable the default
shortcut F1 by selecting the entry and pressing Enter to change it and
then pressing the backspace key instead of the shortcut you would
usually use. The Shortcut Key entry should change to Disabled. Now
you should be good to go and use F1 in terminal.

I personally disabled all the shortcuts this way and I can use them
directly in terminal. All but Ctrl-F1 work fine. Ctrl-F1 does nothing.
It seems to be an old bug inherited from Xterm. While in Xterm it has
been fixed a while ago, in gnome-terminal it persists.

If you really want to test all shortcuts I suggest using xterm or better
*lxterm* which is a locale-sensitive wrapper of xterm.

This bug affects signed numbers too. If you got a negative result by the
calculator it will not use the common minus sign but a different similar
looking character. If you paste such results into a programming source
errors are hard to find.

Same issue here.

Can't make any back-ups. This is extremely frustrating, the ability to

Happens with Brasero, XFBurn and any other program, definitely appears
to be a kernel issue.

I am not convinced this is a duplicate of bug #282315. #282315 is
apparently fixed by the patch Don't stop the timer during autosave
 available here:
 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=136917

But that bug causes the time to be reported as less than one minute,
because the autosave happens every minute and clears the timer when it
 does so.

This does not explain why the time might be reported as more than 77
 days (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556932#c4 ) or similar.

 e.g. I played a game earlier today (Ubuntu 9.04, gnome-games
1:2.26.1-0ubuntu2) and, although the uptime of the machine was just over
2 hours, I was told I had completed the puzzle in 2 days, 19 hours, 13

[Bug 502130] [NEW] Windows become minimized after reordering on taskbar panel

2010-01-01 Thread DisgruntledGoat
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Ubuntu = 9.10
GNOME = 2.28.1
GNOME Panel = 1:2.28.0-0ubuntu6

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open several different windows so that you have several items in the task
bar (say, Firefox and gEdit).
2. Drag the currently focused window to a different position (say, move Firefox
from left to right of gEdit).
3. Use the mouse-wheel to scroll back and forth on the task bar to focus
different windows. Scroll once away from the window you just dragged (e.g.
Firefox as above), then one click to try and focus the window again.

Expected:
The window just dragged (e.g. Firefox) to be focused.

Actual:
That window gets minimized. A second scroll click restores the window.

NB. This bug has been in Ubuntu for YEARS, since I first tried it
(version 7) and is still present in 9.10. Don't know how no one has ever
noticed this...I don't see any reports anywhere about this...

the problem).
5. Drag and drop that item from the Items: list on the right hand side to
another menu in the Menus: list on the left hand side. Normally, with items
that don't have a slash in their name, this would make a copy of the item
appear in the destination menu, switch the view to the destination menu (which
is questionable behaviour), but NOT delete the item in the original menu you
dragged the item out of. You have to go back to the original menu and delete
the item there afterwards to properly and successfully complete the move.
Apparently dragging and dropping in alacarte copies, and doesn't move.
Shift-dragging appears to move, but does absolutely nothing. But that's
normal for alacarte. (I said it was temperamental.) This bug report is not
about this normal behaviour. (If this bugs you, then you go submit another
bug. Don't hijack this one.) What this bug is about is this: When trying to
drag and drop an item that has a slash in its name to a new menu/folder in the
above way, the copy never appears in the new menu, and the view never properly
switches to the new menu (the display of the Menus: and Items: lists
becomes inconsistent at this point; the Menus: list shows the new menu as
selected, but the Items: list still displays the contents of the old menu).
This is because alacarte chokes on the slash in the item name; it doesn't
properly escape it. Additional information can be gathered by closing alacarte,
relaunching it from the command line, and trying to perform the aforedescribed
drag and drop operation again then:

$ alacarte

keyfile.write(open(out_path, 'w'))
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/home/MYUSERNAME/.local/share/applications/CD/DVD Creator.desktop'

It appears that alacarte looks for an item called DVD Creator.desktop
in ~/.local/share/applications/CD/, while in truth there is an item
called CD/DVD Creator.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications/. Just
one more reason to wonder if there's a good alternative to the gentle
horror that is alacarte.

WORKAROUND:

The above problem can be worked around by first renaming the item in
question (e.g. rename CD/DVD Creator to CD and DVD Creator or
GnomeBaker CD/DVD Writer to GnomeBaker CD and DVD Writer), moving
the renamed item as described above, and then renaming the item in the
new location/menu back to its original name that included the slash.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
- Diagnosed on Ubuntu 9.04 (I'll try to reproduce with the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD
and update this bug.)
- alacarte version: 0.11.10-0ubuntu1

MORE SCHTUFF FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES:
- From man alacarte:
alacarte is a program that for editing freedesktop.org complient menus.
(This is basically the entire man page. I also feel very complient today.
Language proficiency is a skill that for writing man pages.)
- From apt-cache show alacarte:

GNOME
  (Right.)
It works with the freedesktop.org menu specification and should work with
any desktop environment that uses the spec.

[Bug 391617] Re: Karmic Koala repeats graphic login screen

2010-01-01 Thread hanet
Similar (same?) problem. Running Karmic x32:
- Login window appears
- Put in password, hit enter
- Looks like it is loading, but returns me to login

This just started for me a couple of weeks ago. If I then log into KDE then
back to gnome I can get in.
Frustrated!

Any ideas?

Re: [Bug 502084] Re: Evince fails to read the fontspec.pdf file

2010-01-01 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Interesting. My thinking then is that the poppler-data package
shouldn't be a separate package at all. I suspect that upstream they
are shipped together as a single thing? Of course, another way to
resolve that logical dependency is to just have poppler depend on
poppler-data. I wonder if that was the case in a previous version of
Ubuntu?

[Bug 490093] Re: [users-admin] Password is reset to old value when it's been changed using about-me

2010-01-01 Thread Pjotr12345
This bug also happens when I try to change the password in a terminal:
sudo passwd seems to work, it asks for a new UNIX password, after that
asks for a confirmation. Everything as usual. But upon reboot the

This is very weird; I've never seen a terminal command fail where a

[Bug 502163] [NEW] Will not take smtpauth change

2010-01-01 Thread c...@earthlink.net
Public bug reported:

Has been working until today. Stopped sending today. I added
smptauth.earthlink.net to the server configuration, then noticed I had
it wrong, and changed to smtpauth.earthlink.net. When I try to send a
message, the error appears Host lookup
failed:smptauth.earthlink.net;Name or server not know.

The server configuaration bex takes the change but does not utilize it, and
sends the error message.
What can I do?

[Bug 44058] Re: suspend when closing laptop lid doesn't work

2010-01-01 Thread gt
In my case it's exactly the same as described by @json684 in post 8 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/44058/comments/8 )

the value in /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state toggles rather than reflecting
the true state.
I'm wondering if this means the bug is in the laptop/acpi software rather than
gnome-power-manager...
My laptop is a HP Compaq nx9005 running Ubuntu 9.10.

I can't believe the bug has persisted so long!

[Bug 490093] Re: [users-admin] Password is reset to old value when it's been changed using about-me

2010-01-01 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Pjotr12345: please report your problem separately against the package
'passwd', this has nothing to do with the present bug. BTW, when
changing your own password, you should use 'passwd' instead of 'sudo
passwd'. The latter won't update your eCryptfs Private dir and your main
keyring password. Please test whether 'passwd' alone works, and tell
this in your report (About Me is using passwd in the background, so it
*must* work.)

[Bug 238183] Re: Useless memory consumption

2010-01-01 Thread Verstraete Linard
I don't think I completely understand you. Forgive me, English is not my
native language...

You say that due to package installation there is an increase of 90MB in memory
usage. But
1) I decline the request to install any packages upon request, by clicking on
the close button. (see Step 2)
2) I never typed in any administration password and I didn't invoke the command
while being root.
So there aren't any packages being installed, ergo it can't be the cause of the
increased memory usage. Correct?

Thanks for looking into this issue and your quick reply.
Happy holidays!

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2010-01-01 Thread Robert Schroll
I think I've solved the issue of metacity grabbing audible system bell
events. The attached patch contains my changes to metacity
(specifically src/core/bell.c). Please give it a try and let me know if
it works for you. If not, please let me know. I am a complete novice
at dealing with .deb files, so it's very likely that I messed something
up and produced an invalid patch.

This patch keeps metacity from grabbing system bell events. As a side
effect it also solves the issue of metacity rate limiting the system
bell events. It does not completely solve this bug. You still need to
load (and possibly reload) the pcspkr module and turn the PC speaker on.

I developed this patch by reverting bits of bell.c back to the version
from jaunty. Here's the reasons for the changes, identified by the old
line number referenced in the diff:

1) Near line 52, I removed the #include of canberra-gtk.h, since we will
no longer be using libcanberra to make bell noises.

2) Near line 281, a large chunk of code is excised. I believe all of
this was for playing the bell.ogg sound through libcanberra, but I'm not
entirely sure.

3) Also in that area, code was restored to keep meta_bell_set_audible()
from being a no-op. The restores the ability of the gconf key
/apps/metacity/general/audible_bell to turn the audible bell on and off.

4) Near line 355, the final argument of a call of
XkbChangeEnabledControls() is changed. This is necessary to keep
metacity from trapping the audible bell events!

As an aside, note that pulse audio's module-x11-bell *can* be used to
play the bell.ogg sound in place of the PC speaker beep for system bell
events. Since this is much easier to change and configure, I see no
reason not to use this in place of the metacity/libcanberra solution for
system bell events in future versions.

2010-01-01 Thread Alex Wardle
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 235945] Re: Rhythmbox gives priority to APEv2 tags and won't display changes to ID3v2 tags

2010-01-01 Thread 10111
Stripping the APEv2-tags from the file solved the issue for me.
Afterwards it was again possible to tag the files and the tags remained
unrewinded. I assume Rhythmbox used the remaining ID3-tags.

I used the following Python-script to strip the APEv2-tags. Save it to a
.py-file, make sure you have python-mutagen installed, make the file
executeable and give the files to change as commandline arguments.

THIS SCRIPT COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY! USE THIS SCRIPT ONLY ON
YOUR OWN RISK AND WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

import mutagen.mp3

f = mutagen.File(fn)

audible and visual bells identically. Thus, this change should allow
metacity to flash a visible bell at 10 Hz. (I can't figure out how to
enable the visual bell in 9.10, so I can't actually test this.) This
seems like a bad idea, especially where epileptics are concerned.

In my uniformed opinion, the responsibility for making system bell
sounds should be moved out of metacity. Then the rate limiting can be
left at 1Hz for the visual bell, while the audible bell can repeat as
fast as possible. A patch I just submitted to bug #486154 removes
metacity's ability to capture audible bell events, leaving the PC
speaker or pulse audio's module-x11-bell with the responsibility for
handling audible bell events. That could be a solution to this bug as
well.

Do you think I should just try re-installing Gnome-Screensaver? I think
it's worth a shot.

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2010-01-01 Thread Twisted Lincoln, Inc.
Downgrading to 2.26.2 will solve the problem, however that version won't
run in Karmic without displaying a bug that causes Nautilus to crash
whenever you display the preferences window
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/422282).

[Bug 112955] Re: vino (vnc) keyboard mapping problem

2010-01-01 Thread scott
This bug is still present in Karmic. Adding the fake keyboard only seems
to work for me if I start the VNC server from an ssh session on the
remote client. The gconf-tool setting up the [aa] keyboard command does
work, but messes with the desktop themes. However the
XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE fix worked.

[Bug 502216] [NEW] GNOME nautilus 2.26.2 webdav authentication broken

2010-01-01 Thread Paul Flint
Public bug reported:

Greetings,

I am using this version currently:
fl...@fts60:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

What can I do to help fix the following bus in nautilus?

Using GNOME nautilus 2.26.2 as webdav client:
$nautilus dav://fl...@docbox.flint.com:1980

Result is that nautilus opens a GUI dialog box, prints;
Enter password for Zope
No password will work because the user should be flint

NOTE:
Using nautilus 2.22.5.1 webdav server finds user flint with the exact same
command.

Regards,

[Bug 174832] Re: ubuntu gnome-terminal - ignores current keyboard layout for shortcuts

2010-01-01 Thread A West
Yes, I can confirm this bug as well. I'm using Karmic Koala under
VMWare and it was really annoying that the keyboard shortcuts for job
control (ctrl-z) and yank text (ctrl-y) were reversed in emacs style
editors were reversed. Just spent five hours researching it and was
relieved to find these posts which helped me devise a solution which
worked for me. My VMWare image from thoughtpolice.co.uk was configured
with two initial keyboard layouts: German (dead keys) and USA. System
default was USA. I added Canada / English, set it as the system default
then removed both the USA and German keyboard layouts. Now the key
bindings for ctrl-y (yank text in emacs style editors) and ctrl-z (job
control) are working properly. It goes without saying that this bug has
to get fixed.

Re: [Bug 44058] Re: suspend when closing laptop lid doesn't work

2010-01-01 Thread Adriweb
I don't think anyone is looking into it.

2010/1/1 gt computerfreak...@hotmail.com

In my case it's exactly the same as described by @json684 in post 8 (
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
 manager/+bug/44058/comments/8 )

the value in /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state toggles rather than
 reflecting the true state.
I'm wondering if this means the bug is in the laptop/acpi software rather
 than gnome-power-manager...
My laptop is a HP Compaq nx9005 running Ubuntu 9.10.

I can't believe the bug has persisted so long!

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When choosing the Action 'When laptop lid is closed: suspend' in Power
Management Preferences, suspend mode isn't activated when closing the lid of
 my laptop.
When manually choosing for suspend (through System - Logout), this works
fine (although I keep getting the logout window when I resume, but that
 might be a different bug).
It makes no difference If I'm on AC or on batteries.

My laptop is a HP Pavilion ZV6000, with ATI drivers 8.24.8 (downloaded from
 ATI)
Running latest dapper (last updated on 09 may 2006)
