I think we narrowed this down yesterday to being a bug in the ubuntu-
mono theme. The problem seemed to be with the way there are symlinks to
.svg files, where the symlinks are named with .png extensions.

I was not able to reproduce the bug on VirtualBox, but I tried installing from
the downloadable image to a new system and was able to reproduce.
But it gets fixed when security updates are installed. So the bug does exist on
the default install. It is fixed now.

1. this is clearly adding a new feature to the existing GDM setup program that
we use
2. we are paste every conceivable freeze date that would impact this change
3. we have a long list of severe defects in 10.04 that require our attention
and that have no work around
