I believe it should say overwrite disk. Blanking a disk means to make
it blank and reset all the bits - this does not happen if this button is
clicked. The disk is not blanked and then written to, it is simply
overwritten in a single pass.

I just found out the source of the problems was an outdated version of
the windows nx client i used.

Login settings: Disable Login
udisks --ata-smart-refresh /dev/sdx immediately got the data on a test
system here using the Maverick livecd. So although it's a bit more
awkward, it's possible to get smart info from the Lucid/Maverick livecds
using that command. However it would be nice to have the data
immediately displayed
Just confirming for a non-64bit, non-nvidia environment.
