Because my desktop machine have similar issue with an Nvidia integrated
soundcard related, I looked again what volume meters are muted default
when I booted with Ubuntu 10.04.3 live CD my desktop machine.
The results is very similar with I experienced the Intel N10 soundcard

To check if it was hardware related, I have just swapped out the video
card for a 5770 and have found the same issues.

Ok, I have a dual boot on this machine.
Both partitions have Oneiric running with fglrx driver now installed.
I have not installed Ubuntu updates on the second partition and the environment
is working better.
I only just updated the linux kernel to 3.0.0-12, confirmed no change, then

(1680x1050) appears fine.

The 'CTRL+T' shortcut still opens new tab and makes it very confusing
(for newcomers). That's with Nautilus 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu5. It should be
noted that this behaviour doesn't break the desktop, because you can
close that new tab (just right click on it and you will see close tab
option).
