I see this behavior as well under Unity, even with global menus disabled
(i.e. I uninstalled indicator-appmenu). Even with the profile setting
"Show menubar by default in new terminals" unchecked, when I launch a
new gnome-terminal, the menubar is displayed. As Victor described, the
"Show menubar"
In 11.10, the inconsistency has been addressed - by not drawing the
border for completely obscured windows. So far, I think it's a
perfectly reasonable solution.

I can confirm that this bug happens in Ubuntu 11.10 if a Western Digital My
Book (1 Tb mirroring) is connected through USB.
Disconnecting the WD results in a gnome-settings-daemon that doesn't crash.
This bug can be temporarily fixed by executing the following script as
startup item in "Startup A

The subscription of the ubuntu-sponsors was done by an automatic process
triggered by my addition of a debdiff. When I added the debdiff it was
already decided that the maintiner of the gnome-settings-daemon, Rodrigo
Moya, uploads it for me and he did. So I did not relly notice this
subscription da
I see that one icon is from gnome and the other from unity

Just install a version of 11.10 and have found that there is no menu
option bar displayed anywhere. having to select different routes to get
access to either the internet or application. Not sure if anyone else is
suffering from this effect

Hi I experience the same problem on one of my 64bit oneirc systems.
I just upgraded two machines from natty to oneirc, and one of them is affected
by the bug, the other not.
Very strange.
Anyway I followed the instructions mentioned in post #2 and attached the
resulting file.

This is the error displayed in a terminal when i launch nautilus by
hand. The crash occurs after some browsing thru the directories.
(nautilus:17115): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_list_store_set_valist: assertion

The problem is somehow triggerd by the installed languages.
I had English, German, French, Italian, Portuguise and Esperanto
installed on the machine that was affected by the bug.
Now I just removed all languages but English and German, and now the
user-accounts starts up as it should.

Correction, this is a problem with my user settings from Ubuntu 11.04.
I don't have any problems with a new user account.
