I can confirm that this issue seems to be resolved for me as well.
Sometime between my last point 1/17 and David's post an update fixed my

Just had a look at the update and I have to say the System Settings
looks a lot better now that the icons have been redone to a larger size.
Impressive stuff! It reads much better with the name Appearance and
look.
I take it the decision not to move the launcher icon size into the
Universal Access
Workaround learned from bug 912446
e.g. select files with ctrl+left mouse, make sure the right click to access
context menu hits a file name instead of empty space, then it'll be displayed.
Usability pain happened more than once when a file name is short and already
selected but right click hits
Right-aligned labels would solve this specific problem by setting them
nearer to its controls, as seen in the wireframe I'm attaching. But the
solution arises other problems: the 'Background' label seems out of
place, and the 'Launcher icon size' option seems to belong more in the
'Launcher' tab[1]

Since updating last, the gnome fallback session is suddendly not
allowing wine fullscreen apps (games) to occuppy the whole screen,
leaving the useless top and bottom bars (which disrupt the viewtomodel
mouseclicks of the apps too)

So we're confirmed & established that evince corrupts data (valid .pdf
files)... unfortunately evince is embedded in ubuntu-desktop:
