I may not be answering your question mario but the last time when I used
nautilus, columns became re-sizeable so I thought that was enough. At least it
was useable thought it might be incovenient.
Nautilus has been getting worse and worse so I am using Nemo now and you are

An adjusted balance *is* restored after restart, but slider on the UI
says it's 50/50.
The balance-slider apparently has a number of problems. I don't know if

gnome-control-center is only a configuration UI, it can't restore
settings on start since it's not running ... that should be something
for pulseaudio or a session service like gnome-settings-daemon

Attila, that patch removes the use of a function that isn't available in
gtk+ 3.10 (we won't upgrade to 3.12 in this cycle). Gtk should pick up
the accelerators from the menu xml, but doesn't for some reason. I've
added a workaround to the patch at lp:~larsu/evince/fix-accels.
