[Bug 1773502] Re: High CPU usage in gnome-shell & Xorg when using Firefox

2018-05-26 Thread Yuri
I restarted my computer 3 time.I launched FF and the top command. The home page
of FF is https://www.bing.com/?cc=be. I opened a second tab with
maps.google.com. Everything was find. I lauched system monitor and then, the
CPU of one core jumped to 100 %, even after closing the maps.google.com tab
(see screenshot).
When I'm in system monitor, the tab Ressources take 100 % of 1 CPU. If I switch
to the tab Processes and change the ordering of the list, it goes down. When I
come back to the Ressources tab, it reaches again the top. Same thing if I go
from the Ressources view to the File System tab and back to the Resources tab
(see screenshot from 11:50 AM).

The CPU seems taken by Xorg (see screen shot). When the gnome-shell proc
take most of the CPU, the overall CPU seems to be reduced after some
seconds.

[Bug 1773503] [NEW] should offer restart after system firmware upgrade

2018-05-26 Thread Rachel Greenham
Public bug reported:

The Software app launched by itself this morning to offer me a system
firmware (uefi bios) update of my Dell 9370. Presumably in its role as a
front-end to fwupd. That's not the bug, that's brilliant, that's pretty
much my last remaining reason to keep a Windows partition dealt with.
:-)

The bug is that when I clicked Update to let it do its job, the
procedure *appeared* to fail, not by reporting an error, but simply
returning back to the same screen offering the same update. Of course,
it was a system firmware update so you need to reboot to apply it, but
there was no communication from the app to that effect.

Therefore, the bug is that it *looked* like it failed, when it didn't.
It's a usability/user communication issue.

Expected: After applying the update it should throw up a standard
"restart needed" dialogue, as you get on eg: a kernel update. (User can
obviously then choose to do it now or later, as normal.) And in that
case, also, for the updates tab in Software to not continue to show the
update as needing doing.

(When I did finally reboot, the update ran completely successfully.)

NB: I was watching fwupdmgr monitor while Software ran the update, and
indeed it looked there as if the end-state was the previous version of
the system firmware was still in place, but no errors reported, so if
Software is looking at that (or a more direct-from-the-daemon
equivalent) its behaviour may be rational, and the bug is really in what
fwupdmgr monitor is reporting. ie: maybe whatever Software is looking at
to monitor progress needs to actually report that a reboot is needed, so
it can pass that along to the user.

[Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2018-05-26 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
This bug needs to be reopened.

I'm using a freshly installed and updated Ubuntu 16.04.4, with a laptop
and an external monitor.

When the Brightness & Lock timeout occurs, my monitors do go off at
first, but my laptop's built-in monitor wakes backup up permanently to
the ubuntu login screen.

I'm worried that it is going to eventually ruin my monitor. Due to this bug,
I'm going to have to create a cron job to run this command routinely:
xset dpms forceoff

Please mark this bug as NOT FIXED!

[Bug 1773502] Re: High CPU usage

2018-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK. Please reduce the problem down to a single app, like just Firefox. Now,
please let us know:
  1. The version of Firefox; and
  2. What web page(s) cause the biggest problem.

I think my list of planned fixes for Ubuntu 18.10 [1] will be the best
avenue for helping you because the Celeron 847 has a passmark [2] of
936, and I estimate gnome-shell presently requires a CPU with passmark
around 5000 or more to run smoothly. Obviously we need to get that
number down a lot by optimizing gnome-shell in future...

Good day.

I have two computers. One is a desktop with Ubuntu Mate 18.04 installed

My second computer is a Laptop HP Pavilion with Ubuntu Mate 18.04 onto

appearing saying Oauth2 not found. I used to have it on Linux Mint and
it did install, set and run flawlessly.

It tell me to cut and paste the code into the application. What
application ???

Also apparently it is suppose to be able to import profiles but I never
succeded doing that as it does not gives any clue of what the name could
look like.

Thanks for reading me and for your help if you can.

[Bug 1755800] Re: Greeter/lockscreen fails to authenicate in an endless loop. Repeated "No space left on device" errors and strange swap file configuration

2018-05-26 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
We can close this bug report at this point. But I do appreciate the
follow up!

It turns out that there were two problems. The first was that 18.04 had
misconfigured the cryptoswap so that was not working at all. I reported
this separately before the release of bionic and I believe that this bug
has been fixed by the maintainers. The second was that the kernel was
running out of inotify watches and this prevented (for some reason) gdm3
from allowing logins to complete. The inotify watches were being
consumed by the Crashplan java app. I increased the
fs.inotify.max_user_watches to 1048576 and that solved the problem. I
realize that this consumes some unswappable ram, but I rather have
Crashplan than not.

[Bug 1773561] [NEW] Xenial/16.04: GIMP needs a security update - unfixed issues (CVE-2017-*).

2018-05-26 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello.

GIMP package ('Universe/Security' section), available in "Xenial"/16.04
LTS Release, contains unfixed security issues and is vulnerable to, for
example, heap-buffer over-read, out of bounds read and stack-based
buffer over-read etc. The whole this is pretty strange, because Ubuntu
Releases released before and after "Xenial", contains updated GIMP
version!

Anyway, it looks this way: in "Trusty" the available version is:
'2.8.10-0ubuntu1.2' (please see [1]). "Bionic" has '2.8.20-1.1' version
(please see [2]). Both Releases contains fixes for mentioned security
issues: CVE-2017-* etc. However, GIMP version in "Xenial" is
'2.8.16-1ubuntu1.1' and does not contain any security updates from 2017.
(The last one is from Thu, 30 Jun 2016.; please see [3]).

Security updates with fixes for mentioned CVE's (please compare changes
in 1. and 2. with 3.) were released on Thu., 18 Jan 2018 - for "Trusty"
and Tue., 26 Dec 2017 - for "Bionic". In "Xenial", the last security
update is from Thu., 30 Jun 2016 (fix for CVE-2016-4994) and there is no
further updates!

Here is a CVE list, which are not fixed in "Xenial", but in "Trusty" and
"Bionic" only:

1/ CVE-2017-17786: Out of bounds read
2/ CVE-2017-17789: Heap-based buffer overflow in read_channel_data
3/ CVE-2017-17784: Heap-buffer over-read in load_image file-gbr.c
4/ CVE-2017-17787: Heap-based buffer over-read in read_creator_block
5/ CVE-2017-17785: Heap-based buffer overflow in fli_read_brun function
6/ CVE-2017-17788: Stack-based buffer over-read in xcf_load_stream

I wanted to send an email an email to Mr Marc Deslauriers, because he
made the last security update for GIMP in "Xenial" (fix for
CVE-2016-4994). But I decided to report a bug on Launchpad. I hope that
it's an acceptable way. If not, I'm sorry.

By the way: similar problems with unfixed security issues, can be found
e.g. in Audacious and Parole packages. But that's a different story,
completely different story...

Thanks, best regards.

I just found out yesterday that, if you enable auto-login, gdm never
hangs like this anymore.

This is kinda bad for security and debugging/testing but hopefully it
can still be of use to someone until this bug gets fixed.

Also this is not related to bad gnome extensions as, on my machine, gdm
still got stuck on a purple screen with no local extensions installed.

issues: CVE-2017-* etc. However, GIMP version in "Xenial" is
'2.8.16-1ubuntu1.1' and does not contain any security updates from 2017.
(The last one is from Thu, 30 Jun 2016.; please see [3]).

Security updates with fixes for mentioned CVE's (please compare changes
in 1. and 2. with 3.) were released on Thu., 18 Jan 2018 - for "Trusty"
and Tue., 26 Dec 2017 - for "Bionic". In "Xenial", the last security
update is from Thu., 30 Jun 2016 (fix for CVE-2016-4994) and there is no
  further updates!

Here is a CVE list, which are not fixed in "Xenial", but in "Trusty" and
  "Bionic" only:

1/ CVE-2017-17786: Out of bounds read
  2/ CVE-2017-17789: Heap-based buffer overflow in read_channel_data
  3/ CVE-2017-17784: Heap-buffer over-read in load_image file-gbr.c
  4/ CVE-2017-17787: Heap-based buffer over-read in read_creator_block
  5/ CVE-2017-17785: Heap-based buffer overflow in fli_read_brun function
  6/ CVE-2017-17788: Stack-based buffer over-read in xcf_load_stream

I wanted to send an email an email to Mr Marc Deslauriers, because he
made the last security update for GIMP in "Xenial" (fix for
CVE-2016-4994). But I decided to report a bug on Launchpad. I hope that
it's an acceptable way. If not, I'm sorry.

+ ✗✗✗ And the most important thing: if an User had installed GIMP package
+ in "Xenial" Release, he is affected because he is using a vulnerable
+ version since one year! Security issues, mentioned above, are from 2017.
+ So, maybe it's a good opportunity to update GIMP to v2.10.2 version,
+ released on 20., May 2018? At least in non-LTS Releases. Of course I'm
+ not talking about "Cosmic" here. (Version 2.8.X is very outdated).
+
By the way: similar problems with unfixed security issues, can be found
e.g. in Audacious and Parole packages. But that's a different story,
  completely different story...

  Thanks, best regards.

[Bug 1773556] [NEW] systemd does not work with escaped paths

2018-05-26 Thread Nyyr
Public bug reported:

Cannot start systemd service using paths with spaces:

systemd unit file content:
[Unit]
Description=LocalView UPS monitoring service

[Service]
Type=forking
WorkingDirectory=/usr-Socomec\x20UPS-LocalView
ExecStart=/usr-Socomec\x20UPS-LocalView-StartApp.sh

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Although systemd-escape converts "/usr/Socomec UPS/LocalView" path to
usr-Socomec\x20UPS-LocalView,
systemd complains it is not an absolute path when the '/' in front of it is
missing in the unit file:

systemd[1]: /etc/systemd/system/localview.service:6: Working directory
path 'usr-Socomec\x20UPS-LocalView' is not absolute.

The same applies for ExecStart entry.

When the syntax check was satisfied I tried to run the service:

systemd[11574]: localview.service: Changing to the requested working directory
failed: No such file or directory
systemd[11574]: localview.service: Failed at step CHDIR spawning /usr-Socomec
UPS-LocalView-StartApp.sh: No such file or directory

# ll "/usr/Socomec UPS/LocalView/StartApp.sh"
-rwx--x--x 1 root root 220 kvě 26 17:27 '/usr/Socomec
UPS/LocalView/StartApp.sh'*

Unescaped path in the unit file obviously does not work either.

[Bug 1773570] [NEW] Request for packaging of gtk-doc-manual

2018-05-26 Thread Sebastian Geiger
Public bug reported:

The `gtk-doc-tools` package does not contain the gtk-doc-manual (see
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk-doc-manual/).

The sources for the manual are part of the gtk-doc repository (see
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk-doc/tree/master/help/manual/).

Please package the manual for Ubuntu either as a separate package (e.g.
gtk-doc-manual) or include it as part of the existing `gtk-doc-tools`
package.

[Bug 1773535] [NEW] Delicate failure with Ubuntu when using Firebox email

2018-05-26 Thread Stan
Public bug reported:

I received an email from my healthcare provider, Aetna, requesting that
I click on a link to take me to my login screen for a list of claims -
they wanted some information. Using Ubuntu, the link does create a new
Firefox window, but that stays white and never progresses to anything at
all. Using Windows and Firefox, this new window immediately fills up
with my login information and claims information, exactly as Aetna
intended it to do. I have tried the link with Ubuntu multiple times
with identical results. I have rebooted and there was no change. I am
up-to-date on updates.

[Bug 1747171] Re: "New Tab" disappeared from the GNOME Terminal menu

2018-05-26 Thread Jani Uusitalo
Urgh, I'd argue that changing this back *is* a regression. The merged
menu item has been the default since (at least) 16.04, and now the
cognitive load of opening a new tab has suddenly increased: instead of
"new terminal" I now again have to pick the one I want (which is always
tabs for me) from two options each time, instead of just the one.

2018-05-26 Thread Per-Inge
This is on "Ubuntu 18.10" with 4.17.0-041700rc6.
Opened settings/device/printers clicked on the cog, selected Printing Options
and clicked Test Page.
The page was printed, but I wasn't able to close the window and settings
crashed.

I don't know why 'fglrx-installer' was chosen as an affected package.
During creating a report I've chosen 'gimp' package.

** Package changed: fglrx-installer (Ubuntu) => gimp (Ubuntu)
