[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04

The output of "lspci -k" is attached.

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be anything related to dkms in
/var/log .

[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04

2018-06-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

Comment #14 indeed shows you ran into a lot of trouble on 2018-06-15 and
tried a lot of things to fix the nvidia drivers. The only thing is that
the nvidia drivers have never changed at all since their release in
April:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-390

So Nvidia updates can't be the issue.

Something that did happen just before the problem began was a kernel
upgrade:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/4.15.0-23.25

So that will have necessitated a rebuild of the nvidia kernel driver,
which might have failed and would explain the issue. So...

  1. Can you find any log or text files under /var/log/dkms ?
  2. Can you please run 'lspci -k' on the machine and send us the output?

[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04

2018-06-17 Thread William S Gregory
Noticed previously that the status of my working Gnome (Ubuntu 16.04)
desktop's GDM3 service is a bit different than the bugged machine.
Attached is a series of systemctl status updates before and after
stopping and starting the GDM3 service. Note that I did not run any
other systemctl command against GDM3 since the last reboot for this
output.

There seems to be differences in opening and closing sessions involving
PAM. My working system starts a PAM session and leaves it running. In
the non-working system it appears that GDM ends the session shortly
after opening it, and some child processes have died right away as well.

[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04

2018-06-17 Thread William S Gregory
Manually installed files specified in #12. There was one missing
package, "libglib2.0-dev". Installed it, then ran "dpkg -i *.deb" again.
Rebooted. No apparent change on first reboot. No apparent change after
second reboot.

Note: The debug, or ddeb files, were not installed.

** Description changed:

  Background:

Did a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04, standard Gnome desktop. Used nVidia
proprietary drivers from Ubuntu repo. Worked quite well for over two
weeks. When booting up on Friday 15th June, 2018 no longer had a GUI
login screen. There was just a few lines in tty1. Can still login to
  other terminals and through SSH.

[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04

2018-06-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Another thought is that there was a gdm3 update on 12 June that might
have taken a couple of days to reach you. If that has caused the problem
then it would be a good idea to try downloading and reinstalling the
prior version's files from here:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/3.28.0-0ubuntu1/+build/14516225

Download the .deb files from there, then install them manually by
running:

  dpkg -i *.deb

[Bug 1777378] Re: GDM no longer presents GUI login Ubuntu 18.04

2018-06-17 Thread William S Gregory
Daniel, I am not sure what to do with apport-collect 1777378 from #3,
since it is waiting in vein for a web-browser to open. This won't happen
since I have no GUI desktop at present.

I did try the fix from #5 two different ways:

1> Commented out "WaylandEnable=true" with a leading #.
-This yielded the same problem. A boot to a seemingly hung tty1. Can still
use other terminals and SSH normally.

2> Changed line in question to read "WaylandEnable=false".
-This boots to no useable terminals. Have to SSH in to do anything.

Also, your change to /etc/gdm3/custom.conf is likely to make it
incompatible with the Nvidia driver:

  WaylandEnable=true

Which would explain the lack of GUI.

Please try undoing that change and reboot.

Great. Next please attach output from these commands (run on the affected
machine):
  dmesg
and
  journalctl -b

You can save their output by running:
  dmesg > dmesg.txt
  journalctl -b > journal.txt
and then copy the files to/from another machine via 'scp'.

Please also let us know if the machine has any files in /var/crash/ and
what they are.

2018-06-17 Thread William S Gregory
Public bug reported:

Background:

Did a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04, standard Gnome desktop. Used nVidia
proprietary drivers from Ubuntu repo. Worked quite well for over two

[Bug 1777240] Re: Pop-up window from panel indicator qbirthday too much to the left, not fully visible

2018-06-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I've never seen this bug occur with any other app. I would guess it's
most likely a bug in https://github.com/lafrech/qbirthday/issues/13 and
not a gnome-shell bug.

However it might be a gnome-shell bug if there is something strange
about the window that doesn't happen elsewhere. Can you please try
moving the window into full view and then take a screenshot of it? You
can move it by pressing Alt+F7, then drag and click.

Is the window taller than the screen?

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2018-06-17 Thread teo1978
> Please only send constructive comments.

Here's a constructive comment: Ubuntu, as a distribution, should switch
to another default file manager other than Nautilus, because Nautilus is
poorly maintained and the upstream developers keep making bad design
decisions that only make the software worse. Has been so for years
already, and it doesn't show any signs of getting better.

[Bug 1772365] Re: gnome-shell + chrome doing nothing consumes high CPU all the time

2018-06-17 Thread Lorens Kockum
I am not quite sure I have *this* bug, because it continues after I
close Chrome.

I am using Bionic Beaver in a VirtualBox with 4 CPU threads and 4096
(later 6144) MB RAM out of my 2015 MacBook Pro's 8 CPU threads and 16 GB
RAM. When I start up, everything seems fine. With one single Terminal
open running top, without touching the keyboard or mouse, the gnome-
shell runs at some 1 to 4%, which I find extreme, but the system is
perfectly useable. The slightest use (unlocking the screen after lock,
moving the terminal window, of just hitting space repeatedly to make top
refresh), makes the CPU usage of gnome-shell shoot well over 50%, up to
95%. When hitting space, top and xorg never go above 6% each.

Using Chrome in itself does not cause any problems for me.

However, after opening a video full-screen, the system slows down to a
point where it is not useable, and this state continues after closing
Chrome. The mouse pointer itself moves without difficulty, but the
highlighting of elements under the mouse and the change of shape of the
mouse pointer takes up to twenty seconds. For example, opening a new
terminal by right-clicking on the left icon and choosing New Terminal
needs several (~ tens of) seconds for each click and mouse highlight to
be echoed by the screen, while gnome-shell usage is in the 70s.

Before doing a fresh reinstall with 18.04, this same hardware was
running 16.04, with no problems worth mentioning (when opening 20 heavy
tabs at once by telling Chrome to open all the tabs in a folder, I could
usually start reading one of the lighter ones after only a second or
two, scrolling through it while the others loaded).

2018-06-17 Thread Marco Gaiarin
Public bug reported:

I'm using some ubuntu machine in a network where users data came from

I've setup PAM/NSS to use LDAP account and all works as expected.
Apart assigning local group to users, via pam_group.

I've added to /etc/pam.d/common-auth (to the end):

and added to /etc/security/group.conf:
 *; *; %sysops; Al-2400;

but groups are not added as expected, i'm not in 'admin' or 'sudo' group
(eg, i cannot do administrative tasks) and if i fire up a terminal:

 gaio@dora:~$ id
 uid=1000(gaio) gid=1001(casa) gruppi=1001(casa),1000(sysops),1003(bbs)

note that group assignment works, eg:

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2018-06-17 Thread Starbeamrainbowlabs
What's the status on this please? Someone seems to be maintaining a PPA
that restores the functionality over at https://launchpad.net/~lubomir-
brindza/+archive/ubuntu/nautilus-typeahead

how hard would it be to just accept that version as the official
version of nautilus?

Sounds to me like those in charge of deciding the direction of gnome /
nautilus / etc. don't really think about the users as much as they
should do - leading to useful features being regularly dropped (is there
going to be anything left?) - this is far from the first time this has
happened.

[Bug 1777240] Re: Pop-up window from panel indicator qbirthday too much to the left, not fully visible

2018-06-17 Thread tellapu
Thank you, Andre, for connecting the dots. Sorry, I did not provide the
reference; I thought it is not relevant as it was dismissed to be a GNOME issue
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/issues/2) and the developer could
just confirm that it was working in MATE
(https://github.com/lafrech/qbirthday/issues/14) which I stated in the
description.
Thanks for working on this!
