I had the same problem... but not able to recover following your
instruction of reinstalling gdm and gdm3. I had to switch to lightdm and
now running lightdm. Not able to switch back to gdm. I'm using a ATI
Radeon Graphic Card not sure if that has any thing to do with the
issue.

I tried the solution suggested by njsf (clearing /var/lib/gdm3) and it
rescued my system as well.
As suggested by Daniel I validated whether the disk was in a
deteriorated state, but this was not the case.

I booted the Dell Studio XPS machine from a USB drive loaded with Ubuntu
16.04. I inserted multiple USB drives (one holding the OS was already

availability of a matching locale to be selectable in Region & Language.
So if you add this Belgian locale:

And this is on NFS mounted filesystems. so the .Trash- directory is
created for every mount point and files moved to trash is moved to that
directory but the content is not shown and not possible to empty.
